Comments

Matthew and Luke report these details. They are excerpts from discussions with teachers of the law, according to Matthew. These men, probably excited by the miracles they have witnessed, express a desire to follow Jesus the Messiah.

He warns them of the trials they would have to overcome if they chose to follow him. It appears that Jesus the Messiah could discern which of these men, though excited by events, were not truly capable of accompanying him. Yet he calls others, clearly discerning the firm resolve in their hearts.

He therefore relied on people's souls rather than their outward appearance, something only the Son of God could do.

According to Luke's account in Acts 1.21, disciples other than the apostles followed Jesus the Messiah from the beginning of his ministry. Furthermore, Luke 10.17 states that Jesus the Messiah sent 70 disciples to evangelise the country. Clearly, then, a large number of people followed the Teacher.

Luke 9.59 and Luke 9.61 recount the story of men who wanted to follow Jesus the Messiah but were torn by family obligations. These dialogues illustrate how difficult it is to follow Jesus the Messiah, who offers a radically new life.
