Matthew
Matthew 8.23-27 (King James Version)

And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.

And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.

And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.

And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.

But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!

Mark
Mark 4.35-41 (King James Version)

And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.

And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.

And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.

And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?

And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

Luke
Luke 8.22-25 (King James Version)

Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.

But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.

And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.

And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.

Meaning

After several hours of teaching, when the day is fading and the crowd disperses, Jesus the Messiah decides to cross Lake Tiberias. Although we cannot say with certainty that this event immediately follows the discourse analyzed in the writings of Matthew, it is evident that the days followed one another and were much alike, with heavy demands made on him.

Jesus the Messiah took advantage of every opportunity to proclaim the Kingdom of Heaven. This crossing was a moment of rest for him, away from the pressure of the crowd. It should be noted that, according to Mark, other boats were also accompanying him on the sea.

As they sail across the sea, a violent storm arises, causing powerful waves that threaten to capsize the boat. The disciples, in a panic, wake Jesus the Messiah, who is sleeping in the stern of the boat on a cushion, and say to him: “Teacher, do you not care about our fate?”

Jesus the Messiah gets up, rebukes the wind and commands the sea: “Peace! Be still!” The wind calms immediately, and a great calm settles in. Jesus then addresses these words to them: “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” The disciples, seized with amazement, ask one another: “Who then is this man, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Meaning

This miracle underlines several important points:

Authority of Jesus: It demonstrates Jesus’ authority over nature, showing that he is more than a mere prophet, but the Son of God with power over the elements.

Faith and Trust: The event teaches the importance of faith and trust in Jesus, even in the midst of life’s storms.

Revelation of the identity of Jesus the Messiah: The disciples’ reaction shows their progress in understanding the true identity of Jesus.

The miracle of Jesus stilling the storm is a powerful illustration of divine mastery and of the call to an unshakable faith in every circumstance.

Mark and Luke also report this event, and although their accounts are similar, there are subtle differences between them. Here are the main points of each account:

Matthew 8.23-27

Context: Jesus gets into the boat, followed by his disciples.

Storm: A great storm arises, and the waves cover the boat.

Reaction of the disciples: They wake Jesus, saying: “Lord, save us, we are perishing!”

Action of Jesus the Messiah: He reproaches them for their lack of faith, then rebukes the winds and the sea.

Result: A great calm settles in and the men are amazed, wondering what kind of man Jesus is.

Mark 4.35-41

Context: Jesus the Messiah proposes to cross to the other side when evening comes.

Storm: A violent windstorm arises, and the waves beat into the boat so that it is filling up.

Reaction of the disciples: They wake Jesus, saying: “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”

Action of Jesus: He wakes up, rebukes the wind and says to the sea: “Peace! Be still!”

Result: The wind ceases, and there is a great calm. Jesus reproaches the disciples for their fear and their lack of faith. They wonder who he is, for even the wind and the sea obey him.

Luke 8.22-25

Context: One day, Jesus the Messiah gets into a boat with his disciples and tells them to cross to the other side of the lake.

Storm: While they are sailing, Jesus falls asleep. A windstorm comes down on the lake and the boat begins to fill with water, putting their lives in danger.

Differences

Reactions of the disciples: The exact phrases vary slightly, reflecting the different perspectives and expressions of the authors.

Details of the storm: Mark stresses that the boat was already filling with water, which adds to the dramatic intensity.

Questions of Jesus: Jesus the Messiah asks slightly different questions in each account about the disciples’ faith, thus revealing a particular aspect of his teaching to his disciples.

These variations illustrate the different perspectives and styles of each evangelist, while unanimously stressing Jesus’ authority over nature and the call to faith.
