The beginning of the ministry in Galilee

  • The healing of a leper.

This article explores Jesus' healing of a leper, illustrating his compassion and messianic authority, and raises the issue of tensions with the religious authorities in Galilee.

Daniel 9.24-27 (King James Version) :
Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

From the second to the third Passover festival

  • The healing of two blind men

The healing of two blind men at Capernaum, reported only by Matthew (Mt 9.27-31), illustrates messianic faith: the two men recognize Jesus as ‘Son of David’. Jesus heals them according to their faith and asks them to keep silent, wishing to direct the crowds toward eternal salvation rather than toward physical healings. This account prepares Jesus’ answer to John the Baptist in Matthew 11.5.

Matthew 20.29-34 (King James Version) :
And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you? They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.
