A Genizah
A genizah is a space set aside in a synagogue to temporarily store Jewish sacred documents and objects that have become unusable. These objects, such as Torah scrolls or prayer books, are then buried in a cemetery. The Cairo Genizah, discovered in the 19th century in the Ben Ezra Synagogue, is the most famous, containing hundreds of thousands of document fragments covering more than a thousand years of Jewish history.
