Starting from the Bible, we can answer in two steps:
- No, there is no “direct” link between the living and the dead (communication, exchanges, voluntary influence).
- Yes, a real link “in Christ”, but of a different order than what we often imagine.
-
What is clearly excluded
The Bible is very clear:
- No seeking contact with the dead
- Deuteronomy 18.10‑12 condemns every form of consulting the dead, spiritism, and so on.
- This prohibition points in this direction: do not seek a direct spiritual link with a deceased person.
- No mediating role for the dead
- 1 Timothy 2.5: “There is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
- Access to God passes neither through the departed nor through their supposed action, but through Christ alone.
So:
there is no link of the type of dialogue, guidance, protection or voluntary influence between a living person and a dead one, according to the biblical perspective.
-
What really exists as a “link”
There are, however, links of another kind, quite real:
- The link of memory and love
- Our dead go on living in our memory, our history, our choices.
- Their example, their words, their faith can mark us deeply (Hebrews 11 shows this kind of “link” with the believers of earlier times).
- The “communion of saints” in Christ
- Through faith, all who belong to Christ (living and dead) are part of one people, the body of Christ.
- They are already “with the Lord,” we are still on the way, but it is the same Lord, the same spiritual family.
- It is a real link, but not a dialogue: we do not speak to them, we speak to God, with them, in a way.
- A link in the same hope
- 1 Thessalonians 4.13‑18: together we await the resurrection.
- They are in the presence of God, we are still on earth; but one and the same future, one and the same hope.
-
Beware of false spiritual links
There is another danger, biblically speaking:
- What presents itself as “contact with a deceased person” may in reality come from:
- self‑suggestion, from the psychological,
- or, in more serious cases, from an evil spiritual influence passing itself off as a dead person (hence the very strong prohibition of necromancy).
From a biblical point of view, seeking a spiritual link with the dead opens a door that is better left closed. Every spiritual relationship must be directed:
- toward God the Father,
- through Jesus Christ,
- in the power of the Holy Spirit.
In summary
- Direct link between living and dead (communication, protection, spiritual influence): no, the Bible refuses it.
- Real link in Christ (same people of God, same hope, memory of love and of example): yes, but without dialogue or mediation.
God wants our heart to turn toward him, not toward the dead, however loved, to seek comfort, direction or security.
