Chronology of Events

Biblical chronology seeks to situate in time the major events of the New Testament: the birth of Jesus, the start of his ministry, the crucifixion, the resurrection, and the rise of the early Church. This theme brings together articles that compare the data of the Gospels with external historical sources — Roman, Jewish, astronomical — in order to establish reliable reference points.

The exercise is delicate, because the biblical authors do not write with the aim of historical annals, and questions such as the hour of the crucifixion, the date of the birth of Jesus, or the length of his ministry are the subject of serious debate among specialists. The articles also explore the Jewish and Roman calendars and their impact on the reading of the texts.

This journey is of interest both to readers curious to understand the world in which Jesus lived and to researchers attentive to the harmonies and tensions between the different Gospel accounts. Chronology is not an end in itself, but it deeply illuminates the meaning of the texts.
