The Messiah Jesus in Bethany at the Home of Martha and Mary

Luke 10.38-42 recounts the visit of the Messiah Jesus to Bethany, at the home of Martha and Mary, around late November or early December AD 32. Located 3 km from Jerusalem, this village welcomes Jesus in a context of relative calm: the Pharisees have changed strategy, preferring to gather incriminating testimonies rather than act violently. Luke is the only evangelist to mention this episode.

Luke 10.38-42 (King James Version)

Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.

But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Comments

Luke clearly states that the Messiah Jesus, while traveling with disciples, entered the village of Bethany. This locality, where Martha, Mary and Lazarus live, is situated about 15 stadia from Jerusalem, a little under 3 kilometers. That represented about 30 minutes of walking at the time, according to the Gospel of John 11.18).

We do not know whether the Master’s destination was precisely Bethany or rather Jerusalem. There is no special feast during this period, between 7 October () and 15 December ().

It is therefore necessary, despite the restrictions imposed by the attitude of the religious authorities, to consider different options for travel within the region during the two months separating these two celebrations.

We have considered a change of strategy on the part of the religious authorities. Indeed, it seemed difficult for these to bring about the murder of the Messiah Jesus without suffering the reproaches and hatred of the crowd that favored him. It therefore seemed preferable to them to seek incriminating testimonies in order to bring him officially before the Jewish court, the .

In this context, the Messiah Jesus could once again travel without incurring any particular risks. He was fully aware that his actions and words were under close surveillance, which could be used against him.

Therefore, a stop in Bethany, at the home of Martha, Mary and Lazarus, during a journey toward Jerusalem, appears to be a plausible option.

There are several clues in Luke 10.38-42 that suggest the Messiah Jesus already knew Martha, Mary and Lazarus before this episode.

The information in .38-42

Thanks to the information reported by Luke, we now understand that the Messiah Jesus is no longer, at least for the moment, at risk of arbitrary arrest. However, the are organizing a response. It is important to remember that there is no total unity among the religious authorities: within their own group, opinions differ regarding the person and role of the Messiah Jesus.
