The study of Frederick A. Larson

A notable contemporary contribution to the study of the Star of Bethlehem is that of Frederick A. Larson, author of the book and documentary The Star of Bethlehem. Using computerized astronomical simulations, Larson proposes that the phenomenon described by Matthew corresponds to a series of remarkable planetary configurations, centered in particular on the planet Jupiter, traditionally associated with royalty in ancient astrology.

According to this hypothesis, the conjunctions observed around the years 3 to 2 BC, together with the retrograde motion of Jupiter, could explain both the appearance of “the star” and its apparent “stopping” (Matthew 2.9). This approach has the advantage of offering an explanation based on observable natural phenomena, while remaining within the framework of the astrological interpretations of the time.

However, this theory remains debated, notably because of its strongly astrological reading of the text and certain interpretive assumptions concerning the Magi. It nonetheless constitutes a significant modern attempt to bring together biblical data and astronomical reconstruction
