It is quite possible to have storms on the Sea of Galilee (Lake Tiberias). Although the lake is relatively small and shallow, it can still experience extreme weather conditions, notably windstorms and large waves. These storms can be caused by weather fronts passing through the region, creating violent winds and waves that can make navigation dangerous.
Storms on the Sea of Galilee are often mentioned in the Gospels to illustrate the power of Jesus and his ability to calm the forces of nature. In reality, however, sailors and local inhabitants must always be ready to face these difficult weather conditions.
There have been dramatic storms on Lake Tiberias over the years. Because of its geographical position, surrounded by high ground and temperature contrasts, the lake can experience extreme weather conditions.
Here are some notable examples:
Storm of 1991: A violent storm struck the region, causing significant damage to infrastructure and homes around the lake.
Floods of 2013: Torrential rains caused massive flooding, affecting the surrounding areas and causing considerable damage.
Storm of 2020: Another storm caused enormous waves and violent winds, making navigation dangerous and damaging buildings and infrastructure.
These events show that Lake Tiberias can be subject to extreme weather conditions, despite its relatively small size.
There is a season favorable to storms on the (also known as Lake Tiberias or the Sea of Galilee). Storms are more frequent in autumn and winter, when the temperature differences between the lake and the surrounding heights are greater. These temperature differences can cause violent winds and formidable waves.
Storms can be particularly intense at night, as mentioned in the Gospels where Jesus walks on the water to join his disciples (Matthew 14.22-33; Mark 6.45-52 and John 6.16-21).
